Profile
I completed my specialist training in oral medicine in 1994, at the Eastman Dental Institute in London, after graduating in medicine and dentistry in Ireland. Much of my career has been spent working as a clinician and clinical academic in centres of excellence in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. Most recently, I held the role of Professor of Oral Medicine and Head of Oral Health at Auckland University of Technology; previously I was Head of the Discipline of Oral Medicine at the University of Otago, School of Dentistry.
In addition to my work as a clinician I am actively involved in research and teaching and have held appointments on a number of national and international committees, regulatory bodies and patient support groups. I am a Fellow of the British Society for Oral Medicine and a member of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. In my role as a clinical academic I have lectured internationally and published widely in peer reviewed journals and also acted as an external examiner in dentistry and oral medicine to a number of overseas universities.
